Jack Hamilton began
his artistic career as a master framer. He produced fine, handcrafted
frames for many nationally known artists, including some prestigious
members of the renowned Cowboy Artists of America.
Jack always had a
flair for drawing and art, but became more aware of his talent in his
late 30’s. Challenged by the talents of a well known artist, he
completed his first painting and immediately realized that he had a
natural gift for working with oils. Basically self-taught, his years of
working with oils blossomed into visual delights for the art buyer.
Jack painted many
varied subjects over the years…including western, wildlife, Native
Americans, railroad and historical pieces. He was a stickler for detail,
a must for getting the subject correct and accurate. He utilized live
models dressed in costumes produced by his wife to accurately portray
period themes. He spent many years collecting historical background
information, including hundreds of books. He also had a huge photography
collection. All of these tools were used to produce his finished works.
Jack enjoyed every
part of the process…from the stretching of the canvas, sketching the
subject matter and mixing his own palette of oil paints…to handcrafting
his own frames. Working with oils was his love from the beginning. He
was able to capture texture and depth on each canvas.
Jack exhibited in
many art shows over the years, taking top honors and awards. Some of
those include, “Spirit of the West”, “Southwest Classic”, “Diamonds and
Spurs”, the Grande National at the Cow Palace “Celebration of Western
Art” and others. Jack’s work was featured in Southwest Art Magazine and
Western Horseman. His work also graced the cover of
Hunter’s Quest
Magazine. Jack produced several collector’s plates and steins, as well
as eleven limited edition prints.
Jack has since
deceased; he passed away on August 20, 2007 at the age of 64. He really
enjoyed the mix of art and ranching. He found the spectacular local
scenery and historical surroundings a positive creative incentive for
his artistic talents.
Many individuals,
companies and corporations collect Jack’s work. His art hangs in
several prominent places….including corporate headquarters in California
and Colorado, doctor and lawyer’s offices, title companies, banks and in
the homes of TV personalities and celebrities. One particular collector
has purchased a dozen pieces. So, Jack not only enjoyed adding new
collectors, but satisfied repeat buyers as well.
Jack also
took great pride in designing and handcrafting his own frames for each
piece. His hands were in the entire process, from the stretching of the
canvas to the final mounting of his custom made frames. |
