Royce Roberts' main subject of work is the Texas
landscape which he captures so well in oils. His style speaks
for itself. His paintings are realistic, capturing the beauty
of Texas in the Spring, Summer and Fall. Seeing one of the artist's
beautiful bluebonnet paintings makes you appreciate the state
flower even more.
Born in Hope, Arkansas, he is a self-taught
artist who started painting and drawing at a very early age.
He moved to Houston in 1948 after being discharged from the Navy.
At first, he painted as a hobby, continuing his barber business
as a source of income.
In the early 1970's, his destiny turned. A television show in
Houston featured the barber-artist and within a week, every painting
in his barber shop had sold. He took his paintings to a gallery
in Houston and the owner liked them so well he offered to buy
all Roberts painted if he would retire his barber's shears.
In 1977, Royce and his wife bought a small
ranch in Burnet County where he is constantly surrounded by his
sources of inspiration.
Two of his paintings were chosen to be presented
to Governor Preston Smith when he left office. He was featured
on "The Eyes of Texas" television show in April 1979.
In November 1984, he won the silver award for a painting he exhibited
in the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame show and sale. His works have
been featured on the Independent Cattlemen's Association Magazine
in April and October of 1985 and, on the telephone directory
covers for Waco, Wichita Falls/North Texas and Temple for 1986. |
